TOTD: Is your resume blah?

Filed under: Service: Resume Writing & Editing, Tip of the Day — Psonya @ 10:22 am

When I first meet with clients, one of the things that I do is put their resume in a stack of other resumes and ask them to thumb through the stack and stop when theirs catches their eye. It almost never does. Now, imagine that they were sitting at a desk thumbing through resumes for potential candidates and the resume that they submitted was passed over. That, most often, is fatal. Why does it happen? Well, generally because the resume is….blah.

The very first thing that your resume must do is stand out from the crowd. This indicates that you, also, stand out from the crowd. Here are some tips for resume drafting:

1. Don’t be afraid to use bold print, different fonts (Times New Roman is NOT a dealbreaker), bullets in moderation, and borders and shading.
2. Unless you are writing a vitae, two pages is enough and one would definitely suffice. The general rule is that you want to touch on key points, but not throw the kitchen sink in your resume. Why? Well, because you need to have something to talk about when you get to the interview, if they’ve read all of it, what are you going to say?
3. Use the job description in formulating your resume. If the description calls for someone who is motivated, then the word “motivated” needs to appear in your resume.
4. Center your resume around related experience. If you are applying for a job as an engineer, then you probably could leave off that you worked at Taco Bell in high school.
5. The dreaded “Objective.” Employers already know what your objective is…to get a job. They know this because your resume is in their hand. Instead of reiterating that, use the space at the top of your resume to sell yourself to them in a few short sentences. If they like what they read there, they’ll keep reading.

I hope these tips helped someone out there today. If there are any questions, please feel free to ask them in the comments or e-mail them to psonya@savvyscribes.com. Thanks for reading, and happy job hunting!

Welcome to The Business Card!

Filed under: General Information — Psonya @ 4:37 am

The Business Card has been created as a way for people to advertise, network, and find people and services that they need. Whether your business is a certified, registered entity, or just your “side hustle”, you can list it here! Based upon the e-mails that I receive, I will post businesses that you would like to advertise and one daily tip.

There is no geographical limitation and the only businesses that I will NOT place on the site are those that are sexual in content or nature.

If you would like to place your business on this site, please send an e-mail to the_business_card@yahoo.com. In the text of your e-mail, please list all identifying information, including:

The name of the business
Any contact information that you wish to include, but be sure to list your city and state.
Any website or e-mail address that you wish to link to your listing.
And, most importantly, a short description of the services that you offer.
**Also indicate in your e-mail whether you would like your post to be left open for comments, or whether you would prefer to be contacted in some other manner.

If you would like to be the author of the tip of the day, please send an e-mail to the_business_card@yahoo.com and in the subject line, place “Tip of the Day.” Include the tip or article that is relating to your area of business, and you will be informed of the day that your tip will be posted.

It’s that simple!
